D’incensi e dell’arte del fumigare

C’era una volta un tempo in cui il valore di certe cose era inestimabile. Un tempo in cui le cose importanti non svanivano, ma rimanevano dormienti in attesa del momento in cui risvegliarsi ed apparire in tutto il loro splendore.

Un tempo si spendevano ricchezze inverosimili per gli incensi, si costruivano strade internazionali per favorirne il commercio. L’atto della fumigazione era una cerimonia praticata ogni giorno, per i nativi americani, in particolar modo per gli sciamani, tale cerimonia è un modo per stabilire un collegamento tra il cielo e la terra.

Ma come funziona esattamente una fumigazione? Si lasciano ardere sostanze aromatiche, spesso di origine vegetale, su una fonte di calore quale un carboncino o candela. Salendo verso l’alto il fumo porta con se l’aroma e lo diffonde nell’ambiente assieme ai principi attivi delle sostanze delle quali è composto, così facendo vengono assorbiti dal naso e la bocca agendo poi sul corpo e sulla mente. In realtà l’atto della fumigazione è molto più coinvolgente di quello che si pensi, attiva in accordo la vista (osservando le spirali e i nastri di fumo librarsi nell’aria) , il naso (inaliamo e assorbiamo i principi attivi), il tatto (percependo il calore nell’atto di accendere il carboncino o candela e anche al contatto con la materia prima da fumigare), l’udito (che si attiva ascoltando il bruciare del carboncino appena acceso).

La fumigazione per altro si trova alla base dell’aroma terapia e poi della profumeria, ricodiamoci che il termine “profumo” deriva dal latino per fumum che vuol dire “tramite il fumo”. Se nel passato le fumigazioni venivano utilizzate come vettori per comunicare ed inviare messaggi al cielo e purificare ambienti malsani, quanto anche a profumare oggetti, indumenti ed influenzare magari l’attività onirica oggi purtroppo sono in pochi ad avere una vera conoscenza approfondita di questo rito. La società purtroppo ci espone a fumigazioni anche involontarie: pensiamo alle ciminiere, allo smog delle automobili che non portano alcun benessere; persino nelle nostre case viviamo la presenza di odori sintetici e contraffatti. Per fortuna negli ultimi dieci anni l’aroma terapia sta risvegliando un interesse ed una consapevolezza che sembravano perduti ormai. Stiamo cercando un nuovo legame con la natura, il senso dell’olfatto è stato a lungo messo da parte e stiamo cercando valori al di la dell’artificialità e del consumismo.

Stiamo tutti cercando tempo per noi stessi, per sfuggire allo stress, per liberare l’anima nei piacevoli momenti di meditazione e attraverso l’incenso troviamo momenti di vera spiritualità. L’incenso richiede tempo, tempo che dobbiamo concedere se vogliamo riceverne in cambio. Accendiamo la candela o carboncino, sistemiamo l’incenso e ventiliamo in modo che la combustione non s’interrompa… tutto questo mentre sprofondiamo nella percezione immediata del fumo e dell’aroma.

Nell’incenso che brucia, nel fumo che sale, cogliamo il simbolo della transitorietà della materia. Momenti di pura riflessione ed introspezione.

Dal verbo latino inspirare suggerisce come l’atto del “soffiare” possa influenzare la mente e quindi l’ “ispirazione”, le nostre capacità creative.

L’olfatto è uno dei sensi più antichi: dal centro cerebrale olfattivo si è sviluppato il cervello pensante, ossia la corteccia. Grazie alla combustione, i tessuti vegetali liberano le molecole aromatiche che salgono con il fumo e si diffondono nell’ambiente. Quando respiriamo tali molecole entrano in contatto con la mucosa olfattiva alla radice del naso e lo stimolo viene trasmesso al centro cerebrale: qui si influenzano le sedi emotive, la produzione ormonale e il sistema neurovegetativo. Gli aromi hanno una percezione diretta sulla nostra percezione e ciò spiega il forte influsso delle fumigazioni possono esercitare sull’umore, l’emotività e stati d’animo.

Se gli antichi saggi custodivano i segreti sulle capacità degli incensi di dischiudere le porte della coscienza e potenziare la percezione di altri mondi, noi nel nostro quotidiano possiamo utilizzare questa materia preziosa per ritagliarci un momento sacro solo per noi stessi. E magari ritrovare questo momento in piccola parte per tutto il giorno indossando fragranze a base d’incenso, resine e altre materie che ci ricondurranno al momento della fumigazione.
